Innovative Engineering Solutions for the Future
Desert Rose
The Challenge: The UAE faces water scarcity and high consumption rates. While the northern mountainous regions utilize dams and canals to harvest rainwater, the vast, flat, sandy western regions required a more creative, innovative approach.
The "Desert Rose" Concept: To tackle this, the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) engaged CONSER International to develop a solution. The resulting "Desert Rose" is a modular, automated, funnel-like system designed to harvest rainwater.
Design and Functionality:
The system mimics an inverted umbrella to collect water and features electronic sensors that detect rain, triggering the device to open to receive water and close when rain stops.
It protects stored water from environmental contamination and stores it in underground covered tanks for immediate or future use.
The units are small and can be deployed individually or linked as a large network to cover extensive areas.
Implementation: The design and innovation process involved key leadership, including Colonel Abdulla Al Mandous and Dr. Omar Al Yazeedi, with project guidance from CONSER INTERNATIONAL CEO Wassim Haroun. The device prototype was manufactured locally in the UAE, allowing stakeholders to participate in every stage of development.
Strategic Vision: This project aligns with the vision of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan to ensure sustainable water sources for the nation. Officials view the "Desert Rose" as a foundational innovation for the UAE's water security.

Mountain
Villas
At CONSER we understand that engineering solutions should be created to cater for the needs imposed by nature, entourage & bio-systems rather than adopting typical designs that would require exaggerated costs and that were attempted at totally different environments. The Mountain Villas design stand as testament to CONSER's approach that molds solution around the surroundings, preserving the unique advantage of the terrain, while still offering high- end developments for the modern end-user.
The steep and solid mountain slopes of the Hajar mountain range spanning from Oman to the UAE, posed conceptual constraints that defy conventional approaches for architectural layouts of large projects, implying access and construction problems on one hand, and raising typological concerns on the other hand, for the integration of a multitude of repetitive volumes to the mountainside should be a natural blending rather than an artificial addition. The singularity of an appropriate architectural conception should be bold in expression, but it also has to belong to the anthropological and traditional timeless character of the sociocultural environment in these mountainous regions.
In response to such constraints, and taking into consideration fair ratios of aesthetics to practicality to budget limitations, we developed a global solution set as a system that organizes volumetric articulations alongside to, and in the integration of a circulation network, that acts like a tailoring weft linking residential blocks together, and drawing at the same time a bidirectional expansion pattern in both horizontal and inclined directions. The architectural concept combines two antagonist dimensions: unity of the whole as being a mineral outgrowth of the mountain, and diversity of the units, meaning private dwelling modules that can be individualized in many variations, formed by standardized elements. The dwelling units integrate contemporary needs and tendencies in function and form, recapitulating at the same time the patrimonial character of Fujairah. They grant the occupants with complete openness of the space to unobstructed scenery marked at its lower end by the rhythmical roof gardens of the hanging terraces. Thus the dwelling space is open and private at the same time.
Privacy screens (Mousharabieh) separate balconies and decks from lateral exposure. Continuity and volumetric articulation are binding factors giving advantages for spaces that are combined in an optimal packing and benefit from an easy access system based on funiculars, lifts, stairs, landscaped walkways, and shuttle service. Continuity is also a basic clue for the construction process.

Innovative
Engineering Solutions
While the project works assigned to CONSER Qatar covered multiple engineering aspects in terms of roads and infrastructure, there were two areas of innovation in engineering solutions that were a first and that drastically improved technicalities and savings on the project.
Positive Grid Case Study
The First one was the positive grid Storm water design that featured a hybrid system which included long lateral drainage channels that allowed us to keep the overall positive drainage system relatively shallow. The other part was precise contouring of the asphalt surface of the roads and parking areas so that most of the storm water would have unobtrusive flow to the landscaping which featured reed terraces that remove pollutants. Lastly the design also incorporated the first large scale use of modular drainage boxes that were designed to attenuate and exfiltrate the runoff.
The second major innovation was in the electrical infrastructure design for the apron and the 6 plane docks that would supply full electrical power to the VIP aircrafts. The distribution featured an underground manhole in excess of 200 square meters and that had to be capable of supporting an Airbus A380 parked above.
